Located some 00 km. from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is the principal
city of northern Thailand and capital of
the province of the same name.
Popularly known as “The Rose of the North” and with an en-chanting
location on the banks of the Ping River, the city and its
surroundings are blessed with stunning natural beauty and
a uniquely indigenous cultural identity. Founded in 12 by
King Mengrai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai
has had a long and mostly independent history, which has to
a large extent preserved a most distinctive culture. This
is witnessed both in the daily lives of the people, who maintain
their own dialect, customs and cuisine, and in a host of ancient
temples, fascinating for their northern Thai architectural
Styles and rich decorative details.
There is a bit of controversy around the Night Safari in Chiang
Mai. Seems the government purloined national park land to build
it on. This, and that there has yet to be published an environmental
impact assesment has meant that the project is not well supported
in Chiang Mai.

the legend is that an elephant was sent to search for a suitable
location, it circled three times, trumpeted and fell on its
knees at the place where the temple now is.
Close to Chiang Mai is the Mae Sa valley about 30 minutes' drive,
where you will see the Mae Sa waterfall, orchid farm, monkey
and snake farms and botanical gardens.
Performers in the show are a mixed collection of dogs, including
golden retrievers, Dalmatians and a German shepherd. This attraction
is part of Mae Sa Golf & Resort and shows during the day
and an entry fee.

and counting exercises and a demonstration of how monkeys climb
trees and retrieve coconuts.

off the trail for picnicking.

elephants along with a collection of hunting equipment. Bananas
can be bought to hand-feed the elephants and take photos with
them.

products and souvenirs from many Chiang Mai villages and hill
tribes. Local cloths and fabrics are reasonably priced for purchasing.
